Lack of identity is one of the most pressing issues of our time, and it’s certainly not limited to teenagers.
Taneka Rubin, Author of Winners Win
It’s easy to be stuck in an identity crisis when you don't know who you are. Not able to move with purpose.
Children, college students, and adults of all ages experience similar situations until they learn how to deal with life’s issues. As an adult, your issue may look different because of your experiences. But situations and struggles happen to all of us.
You must decide whether you will move with purpose or stay where you are mentally, emotionally, or spiritually. Taneka talks briefly about the Identity Crisis…
Here are a couple of reasons people get stuck in an identity crisis.
These were gleaned from the book.
Unhappy with the direction of your life
You may feel stuck in the “rat race” of life with no sense of purpose. Regretting decisions you’ve made. Or not feeling worthy of success.
But what if you embrace the decisions you’ve made, good and bad?
Accept that what is cannot be changed.
Accept that what you do going forward can be different.
Stay with me, we’ll look closer at this subject.
Playing the game of “Who’s the happiest?”
Do you know the saying “keeping up with the Joneses?”
You could feel unsatisfied with your life because of other people’s opinions. That is no way to live. Neither is acquiring “stuff” that you don’t need because of what others have. That’s keeping up with the Joneses, and it’s not helpful for you.
Have you heard that comparing yourself to someone else is a recipe for failure?
It’s true. Besides that, you could be setting yourself up for feelings of inadequacy or insignificance.
Let’s talk about who you are so you can move from crisis mode. Living a life of purpose on purpose can result from understanding who you are.
Taneka made this statement in Winners Win,
“Most people don’t have a healthy knowledge of who you are.”
Do you have a healthy knowledge of who you are?
Yesterday’s decisions do not have to dictate your future. You may still feel the effects tomorrow.
But you can decide today that tomorrow’s actions will lead to a better future.
Deciding is the first step.
It’s within your control today to take one small action tomorrow. Set yourself up for a better future.
If you typically define yourself by
What you do for a living — teacher, manager, blue-color worker, or homemaker
Your parents, children, or spouse — Dan’s son, Jane’s mom, or Dr. Ted’s wife
Your skills or talents — singer, comedian, dancer, pastor, or storyteller
Let me enlighten you…none of that defines who you are.
So, who are you?
You are a child of God.
So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith (Galatians 3:26)
Does that statement resonate with you?
Do you call yourself a child of God?
You were created with a purpose for a specific reason.
Do you believe it?
You were created on purpose, not as an accident.
What say you?
When you can acknowledge that God is -
your creator
your heavenly father
the creator of all things
…you start moving toward an authentic, fulfilling purpose.
It’s up to you to accept this starting place in your life.
The identity crisis ends when you use the Bible as your source.
Here’s the Good News.
You can decide for yourself.
You don’t have to tell the person next to you if you need time to process this new found identity.
Do it for you!
See what life is like when you accept that you’re a child of God.
